Problem is that even if he tries to say that she is free to leave and that he is only helping her, she is still dependant on him and that creats a very uncomfortable situation.
It has been shown that she probably actually does like him but consider if she didn’t but saw him as a friend. It would be very uncomfortable to stay dependant on him when he clearly wants more but it is very difficult for her to leave him…
This type of things happens in real life, not with someone from 1200 years ago of course but someone from another country and staying with them is the basis for being allowed to stay in the country.
I for one would feel very sorry for the person stuck in such a situation.
