A human usually wouldn’t last through 12 of such genuine whippings, much less stay conscious. Even in most places that have outlawed the death penalty, whippings were outlawed way before, some places even over a hundred years before the death penalty, due to its inhumane brutality and the pure agony of whipping. It’s actually really cool that the author knows how brutal whippings are, by keeping the number in a set in this training to what real whippings were like and considered the upper limit in real life. A lot of authors don’t know what the true whippings of the old times were like, and often writes their characters being punished by dozens, sometimes even hundreds of whippings, which is more in line with the 1900s whippings that were far less severe and brutal.
