Reminds of that time I was DM for a D&D campaign, and my NPC named King Nomed Natas or the Sedah kingdom hired the party to investigate a cult that was disturbing the peace, recruiting members from the citizens, and trying to revolt.
Ah, the looks on their murder-hobo faces when I revealed that due to their actions, they had become demonic in nature, as their new Lord welcomed them into his permanent service for eradicating the nasty good aligned clerics and their retinue trying to bring peace and harmony onto his lands. Disgusting creatures.

I read in one story that had ‘real’ demons and a summoner of them as a antagonist. It made a point it wasn’t the innocent or the unrepentant sinners that was used as sacrifice, but people who have not yet redeemed themselves of sin that were targeted by hell and most desired of sacrifices for demon summoning.
I mention this because I bet the author is going to go with this plot, “Your lies have set me free, especially ones that have caused the death and disappearance of the innocent! Mwah ah ah!!” Forcing the ‘heroic protector’ to be endlessly harassed by an ‘invincible’ opponent or confess what he has done. And/or trace/reveal who has helped this guy become this detached from reality. And if any of the heroic protectors have a similar thing.
