Selling out their backer means they would be killed or assimilated after backer is gone.
Sure, you may need more than a single Akira for your defense, but selling him is not a solution.

Man, he was loyal to the gang and was scared that they were growing to fast and that their “protector/backer” wasn’t with them at all times. It’s a mutiny in the strict sense of the therm but the intent behind it was noble.
