I think the author just wanted to kill off a character to bring in new villains so they used a junk chapter to get it over with cause this was pointless. MC is a grown man and he doesn’t even know how to talk to a child is ridiculous.
simply put the child’s response is somewhat modeled after typical psychological behavior.
A person misinterprets what another does or says (honestly the mc was being a turd aka rude and careless).
Next they get a messed up mental image of what is going on. Children run away from home quite often but not seriously they are trying to escape from “something” regardless if it matches reality or not.
Finally it becomes a huge mess when a bad actor gets involved. That happens far more often than one would “think”. Namely because the bad actors are opportunists, and this can’t be made up. Most crimes are opportunist events.
