Saying he is not Asher, but the reincarnated soul of an old man, and dead hero, would accomplish nothing, that serves no purpose for the story, nor for the relationships described in said story. He is the current Asher, and that’s it, he doesn’t need to torment the living, nor stranding their relationship. He could say “he” is sorry for whatever, and, without revealing his reincarnation, explain how the original felt about it, make some babbling about how now he understands. That way, he actually can satisfy in the best possible way the needs of everybody in the current scenario. Now, if he actually wants to cut everything, that’s a different thing.
