I feel the author was trying to inject some modern day earth standards there lol
12 year old getting engaged to marry when she turns 17 is more than reasonable for the setting they live in. It was weirder how odd they found it when the nobility would do that as a matter of course. Tbh even he would probably have been married by now as a commoner had he not elevated himself as all the females would marry off early so as to start families before many died at the ripe old age of like 20-30 lol
