Considering that a King slime wouldn’t be formed by just a handful of slimes merging together, that the number of slimes needed for a King slime to level up would probably increase exponentially with level, and that it has spent several days in a cave with a monster lure, I would guess several thousand at the bare minimum, if not in the tens of thousands or even the hundreds of thousands.
The fact that he threw a fireball into a cave full of living bombs just meant that even if the initial spell wasn’t enough to kill the King slime outright, the chain reaction from the nearby normal bomb slimes would have finished the job…
