What “comfortable life”? He was a constant fugitive, had fled to the mines to escape one psychotic Awakener, only to be assigned to a 100%-disappearance-rate mine shaft by the crazed gambler running the operation.
He has a 100% chance of dying if he goes back (since he’ll either be taken out by the Awakener or reassigned to the doomed shaft if he makes it back to the mines), so he’ll obviously tag along since the 1% chance of survival is his last best hope to stay alive until he can truly awaken the full power of his ability.
