This story follows the standard unappreciated party member gets revenge plot. The novel aspect is that he lends (them) powers/skills and can take them back. As expected, the other party members are amoral and greedy so you don’t sympathize with them.
However, his lending power is 100% parasitic and predatory. Even if they dealt fairly with him, once he takes back the “loan”, his power guts them of every skill they have. So he is essentially a predatory skill loan shark who just happened to loan to bad people. He was never honest with them about how the loan would destroy them later. So he isn’t actually much of good guy from my perspective and he immediate becomes way too OP for there to be any tension in the plot later.
