I guess, you’ve already forgotten your own premise… so as a reminder:
“Ex reigned supreme over the game Lin Online.

So… he is still in a VMMORPG game, he is not stuck there, the NPC-s are more alive than they should be and he has an existential crisis, because he got almost killed… in a game.
