I can go with the “first time alive” and being reckless plot.
May be he managed to hunt some animals, even though he never hunted before and hunting is damn difficult, because animals are pretty perceptive.
But are we going with mc being able to take down a whole group of neanderthals?
Smart or not, they hunt other animals and fight homosapiens, so they have to be somewhat calculative. And they are also built pretty sturdy, which means that even after getting pierced by spears, they could still keep on fighting to some degree.
They are basically real life dwarf warriors….
And mc with no fighting experience, took down a whole group of those guys?
