OK, so here’s what happened. I was struggling to figure it out too.
The fat guy with the model seems to be a talented card maker. Basically the story implies that good card programmers get women left and right.
The call he got was from the loansharks, who intended to whore him out in drag assuming he wasn’t able to pay in 5 days.
The early part of the chapter was to show discount card shops are constantly competing with each other. So, he has neither time, nor promotional value, nor money. He only has a shop that doesn’t stand out.
