I’m betting the area he started in was an open air dungeon. it would explain the barrier and why the other barbarians and monsters acted weird according to him.
which means there’s more open air dungeons around the world, so probably important for the plot.

That girl there is an actual cleric. Why wouldn’t the people assume a god is making the dungeons? Having all the rules they have cannot make them natural. Especially with the fact that monsters don’t leave the dungeon normally.
