My interpretation of the poem is that you cannot live a life of only good things. You cannot experience only happiness. There will be sad times and periods of conflict. When adversity comes our way, we would struggle to overcome it. I understand it as you would appreciate the good times more when you have suffered. just how you appreciate the sun when you have only seen rainy days for weeks. The only part that confuses me is the “On a night when one is drunk with their sword, even the sweetbriers will be sent flying away.” Because I can see it being interpreted many ways that don’t really synergize with the rest of what I got from the poem. “Drunk with their sword” I think could mean meaningless killings; but sweetbriers are flowers that are fragrant so I’m not sure what they represent in this metaphor. If anyone has any idea please comment.
