So, Knox would have either been killed or made the prince’s servant if not for the headmaster stepping in. This is about equivalent to Dumbledor showing up to save you from Voldemort.
I don’t know why everyone is after “Knox” when there so many others. The game doesn’t show much about “Knox” but we do know that he resent the world. Could his resentment be connected to why multiple individuals are interested in him?
