Since I read “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” by Stephen R. Donaldson, which features the main character, Thomas Covenant, who is afflicted with leprosy I am always happy when it’s used in medieval/fantasy settings. It’s very hard for us to imagine living with modern medicine how devastating of a fate it would be to be inflicted with the disease.
In the past many viewed leprosy as a punishment for sin, leading to a complex mix of sympathy and fear. Lepers were forced to announce their condition to avoid close contact with others, which contributed to their isolation. Despite the stigma, lepers often received care and support from local communities, hospitals, if they were lucky or wealthy, which recognized their suffering. Some lepers were integrated into religious orders within leprosaria, allowing them to live with a degree of dignity.
