He’s totally going for it, he wants to make them go away… but let’s be honest, he speaks the words of truth. It doesn’t make sense that there is such item in a common dungeon.

Wouldn’t be out of character for a Thief class to gaslight the party and conceal his own minus skill that he’s after the boss drop to get rid of. But the tone of the story so far makes me doubt it, everyone in the party is too nice and wholesome for their own good
