It’s a shame so much was cut.
In the novel, Hillan “accidentally” discovered the lich in the former territory of a Demon King, and they actually paid it a visit before things kicked off. Likewise, Hillan was officially invited to the Imperial Palace and recruited there before the story really got underway.
Sure he’s a crybaby but I wouldn’t say a coward. Certainly weak though.
