I didn’t quite understand the question about army strategy…
One part of the army had to cross the bridge (the bottleneck) first, and the other part had to cross the river; it didn’t matter at all.
This actually had a significant impact on the course of the battle (many battles have been decided by the presence of a river: Battle of Issus, Battle of Fredericksburg).
