I tough the weapons and so on were for beginners. This gramps talk big game all the time then goes to a duel with full armor shield and sword against a 15 year old trainee and still have guts to be arrogant. How does one become a instructor when they are not got past the beginner stage of using weapons and shield ?

I’m guessing the instructor developed low self-esteem after seeing many of his Vernier bastard trainees becoming nobles above him, he’s an old man and he has reached his upper limit. Also, this is a world where, bloodline and potential not controlled by you, determine your position in life.
