For those surprised at the gender reveal, you might be right that it is TL error. However ambiguous sexuality of elves is in the lore, not just androgynous but in some sources hermaphroditic or gender fluid. So not outside realms of this world to be correct, nor obvious through part of the story. Of course just look at his sister to realize no gender is based on typical gender appearances in this work.
