Van is more tsundere with the guy than harboring feelings of rage, loathing and mistrust. That is the only massive gripe I have with this story so far.
Van’s been written to be a straight arrow. Deceiving, lying or pretending aren’t his strong suit, so the idea that he’s faking how he interacts with his old friend is unlikely. Besides, an inner monologue would’ve already cleared that up if that were the case.
Which leaves the fact that Van isn’t much of an avenger. Doubt, admiration and other emotions far too easily take the place of the negative emotions one would normally feel towards someone who betrayed you by backstabbing you, annihilating your entire village, family and had you do his dirty work for him for years.
The author completely neglects such a juicy driving force and reduces it to ‘mild annoyance’. Now it’s just about a marginalized kid struggling to break the baked in prejudices. The typical tale of the David-like hero conquering Goliath. The revenge theme should revolt against such oppression from it’s author. ^^
