MC doesn’t understand why she likes him so much, so that makes him suspicious of her. Not to mention his lover died in his arms previously, so he doesn’t want a repeat of that pain. So no wonder he’s pushing her away.
On a personal note, I can’t stand overly positive characters who are naive, so him hurting her is actually quite pleasant to see 😀
