Honestly, I think we should chop of hands for stealing.
1) the people who are on the fence of becoming criminals will most likely not take the risk, stopping these crimes from ever happening.
And
2) it’s not even a practice that’s archaic or something. “Making an example” of someone/something is what institutions, people, companies, governments etc do all the time. They haven’t stopped msking examples out of people for whatever the reason or circumstances.
But more specifically. It’s still in practice today in Sharia Law and all types of religious and secular groups all around the world.
By any account, it’s still a modern practice. Maybe not for the West and everyone controlled by the West (Japan, S Korea etc) but…its still a modern practice.
