So an outer shell appears to be an intuitive barrier stemming from magic power which negates damage, physical and/or magical. Range, expansion, and possible effects have not been defined.

If anyone wants an equivalent, RWBY characters have ‘aura’ which is essentially this. The force of their souls or willpower or whatever, manifested as an invisible barrier that can break under enough duress.
