Ever sice FLERF’s I have a visceral reaction to the English use of the word research.

In Germany in translates to three words:

  1. The more global (in meaning): Forschung. While it, like the English word research, can both mean 2. and 3., it has more the connotation of 3..
  2. Nachforschung: To look information up. Quality depends on sources. In English, not only is this often inflated with the renown of 3., but also YouTube videos by amateurs and charlatans are put equal to scientific papers.
  3. Erforschung: To discover new knowledge. New to humanity, not a single person. Usually anyway. Colloquial it can also used like new to a person, but it always includes experiments!

In English, though…

“Do your own research”, sets the cutting edge gain of knowledge for humanity, equal to watching a YouTube video made by a conman selling his grift.

And that wants me make go on a murder spree. With a hammer. Carpenter, not sledge. Up close and personal. Making it hurt. For a long time.
