I’m wondering when contact will be made to the people living to the west or maybe south or north of the plains. if i remember correctly there was a beast kingdom somewhere…
to the north seems to be mountains and tbat was monster territory, or?

It’s been awhile since I read the first chapters, but from what I remember, the Oni(?) are indigenous people who don’t *respect* the Kingdom’s (or anyone’s(?)) claim of owning the land.
So I could maybe understand her looking a bit sheepish over taking wood from land a friend consider his, but this looks like she’s overreacting (based on what I remember their world-view to be, that is).
