Used to catch monitor lizards as a youngster and the one thing they are not it ‘slow’. they can run (including up trees) as fast as a fit human at full pelt, and they are almost as flexible as a snake and have long dirty claws. Great sense of smell and a tough skin.
Can’t hurt a human, too much, but are deadly to anything same size or smaller. Not: when chased by a dog for eg. will escape up a suitable object like a tree. If a human is the only tall object they will often climb the person and dig their claws into the scalp. The person’s normal reaction is to rip them off by the tail, but if successful, this maneuver often means the monitor is removed along with large pieces of scalp.

That view on childbirth is similar to a thing I read about… I think it was the ancient Azteks.
They believed that the reason a pregnant woman sometimes becomes a bit woozy during birth is because her spirit is in a battle with the gods over her child’s soul, so she’s not entirely on this mortal plane of existence during the procedure. (Which, of course, also carried the risk of getting caught herself, i.e. dying during/after childbirth due to complications, in which case she’d turn into an undead monster.)
And I like this idea, really shows how much you should respect your mother: She went off to fistfight god like a JRPG protagonist so you could enter this world safely. 😉
