MC can use OP magic but uses swordsmanship instead when a kid is being held hostage by a clear bad guy, and trying to reason with him. Seems to always let his guard down and when wounded several times decides to use his OP magic like isolation. Then boss shows up gets wounded again for lowering his guard and then decides to use his other spell like connect to easily defeat them.
If after this when facing other bad guys he doesn’t keep his guard up and give it his best then that means something is wrong with the author head.
