What if it’s not really his past self manipulating him but the fairy that wouldn’t make sense bc why does she want him to get stronger unless it’s for another purpose like fighting a transcendent being or she could be planning on stealing his body and conquering the gates. But making yourself forget certain things so you can improve beyond your past self makes sense so maybe nobody is lying.

interesting take on the “reborn” style. Being unable to remember your past life, limiting the information you’re allowed to have is a neat twist.
