Author be like:
Oh no! The opponent X I sent to MC was to strong! I wanted to make an exciting fight/event, so I pitted an even more powerful opponent against the total OP MC, but I missed the mark and now there’s no way out for MC/MC only can lose.
I know! I make him heavy injured, crippled, or have him even dieing for an exciting plot, but then I pull the plot twist: It wasn’t actually true!
It’s a common tool of author with poor planning. The: It wasn’t actually true – card.
When MC goes beyond recovery, author pulls a “he used a clone“, “it was a dream (/vision) about future events” (with a prophetic dream adding the bonus of being able to go back several chapters and make the opponent weaker), “that was an illusion” (opponent actually isn’t physical [as in being able to do damage] strong, he just used illusions, and people who were convinced enough died without any physical cause. Added bonus: you can rewind any death you like), and similar lazy writing tools.
