The whole joke is around gender confusion. The master uses gender neutral terms. With probably implying the older disciple is male. Or at least avoiding to mention she is a girl.
Dunno if the master refers to her as female in his thoughts, tho.
From that and his previous life (where the other disciple [od] was disguised as male his whole life, but still made out with men who probably knew otherwise) MC thinks the od is male.
