The first clue is how the villagers wanted the sheep after his mother died. It indicates that the village could not afford sheep but she can.

So Turan’s father was a Knight of House Zahr that might have defended or wandered off, maybe for good or a while, which led to a one-night stand that knocked up Turan’s mother. Who knew a got bit of the world, but next to nothing about magic, which is why she was so against his magic, as she was worried about the Nobles coming after him. And now Turan stands at a choice of leaving his flock and exploring the world, or staying and protecting this village.
i thought so, it keeps coming up, it’s like a trope of some-sort.
