From what I understand he lives in an era of wars, being arrogant is a way of survival too. Using what you have as best you can is not wrong, in war anything goes.
This man came back from the future and has skills and potential beyond anyone else. He’s also using everything as an opportunity, he isn’t being egotistical, he’s being realistic and viewing everything as an opportunity to go further than his previous goal.
