Test of strength? So did the demons not kill and brutalize a lot of people? What was the point of subjugating them? Was it all just one big political stunt? “oh hey the economy is bad lets have a bull sh*t war to stimulate it in Keynesian fashion”
On one side it does make the heroine’s firing make more since, as humanity wasn’t in danger and she was just a celebrity, but on the other hand it deflates the weight of his accomplishments.
Now that i think about it, that fits, if all he did was just one big publicity stunt, then why would he think he had talent?

honestly the end of the chapter made me tear up a bit.
