So…recruiting mercenaries, or…taking said mercenary’s swords? Unless he’ll get a new sword and eat that new sword 
It was such a good setup for him staying there, recruiting a band of vagabonds and create a renowned mercenary band. Then through his sword eating skill gain the ability of his fallen comrades and bring them along with him to defeat his nemesis.
“He gonna eat that guy’s sword”…….wait
I know his ancestor is strong but atleast he could have passed good SWORD TECHNIQUES down to next generations .
