It is pretty standard in these power fantasy stories for the character to demonstrate early on how powerful he is and then to focus more on side characters and running organizations later in the story. When nothing in the world can challenge the protagonist the authors have few choices. They could pull a Dragon BallZ and have some outside group like aliens trickle in slowly more powerful then the last or they can flesh out side characters. This arc is a long one but the story eventually moves away from the students and the school.

I think Makoto almost killed Miranda with the attack he did that created a lake
