I feel like the fact that the author made the old man be sick by the time Miyamoto got to him is to symbolize how even “The invincible” is vulnerable, even the greatest people meet their ultimate fate. It serves as a device to make Musashi question himself as to what it means to be invincible if this great man that once was undefeatable is at the mercy of his sword due to his old age. Makes him rethink what it is that he truly searches for.
