With power, comes responsibility. Thorfinn knows of his power & how dangerous he can be, but he choose to control it. Ivar is a dunderhead, he have power but he tries to get every chance to utilize it to his own selfishness.

It’s better to have and not need it, than need it and not have it. If Thorfinn is that serious about peace, then he can create an armory and keep everything under lock and key–but to reject human nature and expect everyone else to go along with it is foolhardy.
It is dumb. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Violence is the ultimate authority. Even if 99% are complete pacifists, you must protect yourselves from the violent 1%. Ultimately you need violence to control the criminals or invaders to protect the peace.
Ivar and his group really wants something out of this. I guess it would be to rule Vinland or something.
i dont get the autor. Being pacifist never worked in reality it just as idiotic as utopia. Maybe autor want to destroy northen as it was in history.
