Cliche is cliche for a reason. That doesn’t make it bad.
If it makes sense I think its fine.
They established early on very little about the Pirate captain BUT the Navy admiral HATED pirates and was proud. So even though it was obvious he would mess things up in this manner at least it was consistent with the characters archetype.
