I see it as a possible reaction to being forced to lose in the previous match.
Already forgot if he was the one who was forced to lose, but I think it was him. Alternatively, he doesn’t want to win the fight too fast, feeling that there must be some sort of trick that his opponent/rival-in-trade hasn’t used yet and he sees it as being underestimated.
Multiple interpretations possible. Why would they leave it on a cliffhanger again!(
