Gary’s strength is a real deal. He slashed through a gambeson like it’s nothing. Normally, a gambeson is enough to protect against slash and cut, not so reliable against serious stab or thrust, and zero against bludgeon. To be able to cut using end of sword on a guy wearing a gambeson is monstrosity.

I suspect the reason why they are out to kill him, is because paul was level 20, and the guild master is also level 20, and someone who can kill a high level person is VERY dangerous.
It feels like the author doesn’t want to give the MC a break at all. The entire pretense of this specific arc was kinda nonsensical – first there’s Paul who f-d around and found out, then there’s the chief who “acts as a leader” but in reality just seems to he strong and sit around, then Paul keeps f-ing around until he found death, now chief is f-ing around even though he doesn’t seem to be related to Paul.
TL;DR: Author, give my man a break, he just wants to chill for a moment.
