The author is pretty naive thinking an unreasonable person faced with the truth will suddenly become reasonable, in reality Haze is more likely to conclude locking you up wasn’t enough and you need to die.

So the presence or absence of one member of a party you met in passing, far from your homeland…is the cause of your home’s troubles. I will mention, since it came up in batoto, a forrest, or a forrest like clonal tree do not need human intervention to thrive.
In Australia there are some clonal trees that are estimated at 60+ and 70 million years, respectively. But humans are only around for 1.5 million years (and hômo sapiens even less).
And in all those million years they did just fine. Even with the disadvantage of being clones from a single tree, prone to fall from a single disease/parasite.
