That MC doesn’t realize that just because he wouldn’t use the sword to hurt her doesn’t mean that there isn’t anyone else that would is just dumb..
If he wanted to protect her he should have destroyed the sword or hide it at the bottom of the ocean..

So the sentiment of “tossing away the holy sword” is a nice sentiment but he should have done it FIGURATIVELY not really thrown it away.
