The problem with not taking prisoners is that people stop surrendering. Armies who take prisoners (and treat them well enough) often find that their opponents don’t fight as hard and will surrender after taking 10% or even 5% casualties. Armies who don’t take prisoners have a desperate fight to the last man over and over, and their enemies are better prepared.
