It’s pretty cool how nothing is simple black and white. Morality is a spectrum based on necessity of self-preservation. Everyone including MC is pretty much just trying to survive, constantly stumbling around trying to figure out what kind of person they are and will be in the future. The Guard Captain is in an especially complicated situation, I really hope they show his past and his decision-making to get where he is now.

The writing is peak, and heilas is damn cool. But I think he will sacrifice himself for Mc one day
