The Empire is probably in fact the least problematic of the three powers. I mean, the fact that a high ranking noble that probably knows all the secrets and still doesn’t defect likely mean that the others suck WAY worse and in some rather horrible way.
My theory is that due to some performance limitation the Empire doesn’t actually forcibly brainwash people or else the capabilities of their units would degrade. The “ghost in the shell” side effects are neither here nor there and should be generally manageable and people would by and large retain their individuality. The only thing you lose is your flesh.
While the power of e.g. of the paladin we saw earlier would come at a cost (all power does). And that cost would be something bonkers and utterly dehumanizing. Something like possession by entities/daemons from another dimension or whatnot.
