I know exactly what this is talking about and it’s a real thing. I even used to do it a lot when competing, granted it was fighting, not football. I’ve also used it in FPS games, where it would let me watch the whole screen (to watch for movement). Even driving, where I can just keep a grid of my surroundings by watching all my rear view mirrors for changes.
It’s similar to un-focusing your eyes, but distinctly different, in that you’re not really straining your eye muscles, but rather you’re refocusing your attention away from your focused vision to your peripheral, when you’re doing it right your vision will go a little “darker” (that’s the best I can describe it). It has some positives and negatives. Like sensitivity to motion goes up, but your color differentiation goes down.
It’s effectively perpetual snake-eyes, because where your eyes are centered on is irrelevant. This can actually be expanded though beyond vision. You can also extend it to information collection from other sensory systems like touch, sound, and smell, which can let you feel things that your brain otherwise tuned out or became accustomed, like I notice my glasses/nose, how my clothes rest on my skin, and smells I’ve normally gone blind to.
Though it is hard to keep up. I was never able to do it for more than 2 minutes at a time and that was only after practicing from a few seconds. I haven’t kept practicing it, because I stopped having as many practical uses for it. I’m actually more surprised that he was able to inter the zone (or flow) before he figured this out. This always felt like a prerequisite for me the couple of times that I did.

People say sport animes are dumb and shit and when an actual good one comes they complain because there’s too much analysis. Okay the story have been a bit long these last chapters but now that Isagi is evolving just stop complaining, analysis is his fucking best weapon
