I get that it’s a manga, and therefore has to be kept compact, but I don’t agree with the conclusion that because Rin chasing Ego’s philosophy cost them this one game, that means Ego’s philosophy wrong. Though I’m not completely on board with his philosophy either, there are plenty of holes to point out, but this is not it.

The way I see, the real top class, the best of the best, are reserved for those that mercilessly pursue improvement. Every time you take “the easy play”, “the safe play”, “the tried and proven tactic”, you are giving up some of your own improvement. One loss today due to failing at a risky play, is worth becoming the best that you can be in the future. You lost a point today for a win you would have lost in the future.

I don’t play soccer, I’m a volleyball player, and back when I started, I constantly got into fights with my teammates and cost us point cause I always pushed myself and refused to take the safe play, always going for a hit where everyone else would have opted for an easy push to keep the rally going. And despite the many arguments, and even being talked horribly about behind my back for years, I am now the primary pillar behind my current team. I have become that player on the court that, no matter how bad of a situation we’re in, no matter how impossible the point seem, they can rely on me and send the ball my way, counting on me to finish the point even if the ball is poorly positioned. In the past 11 games, I’ve only made 2 errors on attack, even though I still play as aggressive as ever. And I would not have gotten here, or at least it would have taking many more years to get here, if I had listened and just taken the easy play.

Though actively getting in the way of your teammates is just stupid.
